Paul Dietzel, the coach who led the LSU Tigers to their first ever football national championship has died; he was 89.

Reports say that Dietzel died after a brief illness.

Dietzel coached the 1958 Tigers to an undefeated season and national championship.  Dietzel coached the team from 1955 until 1961 then went on to coach Army and South Carolina.  He returned to LSU in 1978 in an administrative role.

Dietzel went 109-95-5 in his coaching career.  His 1961 Tiger team went on to win the Orange Bowl over Colorado, his only other bowl win.
