Brook Lopez had 21 points and Paul Pierce scored 17 in his Brooklyn Nets debut but it wasn't enough as they fell to the Cleveland Cavaliers 98-94 on Wednesday night.

With just 28 seconds to go in the game, Anderson Varejao scored to put the Cavs by two.  Kyrie Irving made four free throws in the final seconds to put the game away.

The Cavs were led by Tristan Thompson with 18 points in a game that saw the return of Andrew Bynum who missed all of last year with a knee injury.

The Nets were playing without head coach Jason Kidd, who was suspended two-games for his drunk driving conviction.

The Nets return to action on Friday night when they host the Miami Heat.
