23 More Pa. Rest Areas Reopen on Three Interstates
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has some relief, literally, for travelers through the Keystone State: it is reopening indoor facilities at 23 select rest areas to all motorists.
PennDOT shut down the 30 rest areas and welcome centers earlier this month due to concerns about being able to adequately clean the facilities. A few rest areas reopened for truck drivers with portable restrooms and hand-washing stations on March 18.
Several rest stops are open again on Interstate 81, 84, 80 and 79, including the stop on 81 south in Susquehanna County with additional cleaning and maintenance.
Acting PennDOT Secretary Yassmin Gramian says “While unnecessary travel is discouraged… we understand that some trips are necessary and that access to rest areas is important.” Gramian says the agency will continue to evaluate services and make adjustments where they can be done safely.
