A new armored rescue vehicle will help the police department and the multi-agency Metro SWAT Team in responding to situations including barricaded subjects, hostage incidents, executing high-risk raids, recovering fallen officers or civilians and in weather emergencies.

$275,000 in New York State funds, secured by State Senator Fred Ackshar (R-Binghamton), helped buy the rig that replaces the old unit: a repurposed former bread delivery truck.

Chief Zikuski says the City now has “the proper vehicle to protect our officers.”

The Metro SWAT Team covers a response area of more than 70 miles and encompasses several police jurisdictions.
