Iconic John Barleycorn Tavern Reopens in Owego
A place that had been a popular gathering spot in the village of Owego for several decades is back in business under new owners.
The John Barleycorn Tavern opened its doors Friday for the first time since the establishment at the end of March.
Customers of the establishment waited for six months for its reopening. Tioga County records show the property at 216 Front Street was sold in July for $150,000.
Members of the Eschler and McNamara families had announced last spring they intended to acquire the Barleycorn and resume operations.
Stephen Eschler last month said there had been "slow, steady" progress in renovating the tavern.
Eschler said the new owners considered the tavern to be "just an Owego institution and we'd like to keep it that way."
